Good News for People who Love Bad News product reviews

Forget the year of the Monkey, 2004 is the year of the Mouse...

Weird, wonderful and completely compelling, Modest Mouse epitomise everything that has been - and ever will be - special about indie rock. Formed in 1994 in Issaquah, Washington, Modest Mouse forged their own ingenious, unconventional and easily-recognisable sound early on in the piece through several trademark characteristics that have lasted the distance: lead singer Isaac Brock's signature lisping, manic, scream-sing vocals; infectious, off-kilter pop hooks; angular, delay-drenched gee-tars, and hypnotic, intricate, snaking beats. Throw in themes of mortality and spiritually, vented through cynical and poetic lyrics, and you've got the Modest Mouse sound nailed: a head-spinning, addictive, white trash-punk-pop fireball of contradictions, that's seen them compared (more often than not) to legendary indie pioneers, the Pixies, as well as Built To Spill, Pavement and Sonic Youth.

OK, I have never heard of this band, prior to receiving this CD. I was a bit dubious to start with, but the more I listened, the more the groovy, mellowed sound got to me... in a really good way!

Easy listening is always good by me, and this fits that description perfectly. With a somewhat eclectic mix of tunes and melodies, this album really does have something for everyone.

If you prefer songs that blather on and on and on with the same four lyrics, or are all about hyping the musician's own personage or his/her sexual prowess, forget it... this is not your kind of music. This is good music, with lyrics that keep you swaying til the sun comes up again.

Overall, I was really pleasantly surprised. I am kicking myself that I have only just had a chance to listen to it... I could have really used the soothing influence of this album a few weeks ago. :)
