Before I went through the competition for Hi 5 family pass we did not know about that as we came to NZ recently though it is a famous show. Fortunately or unfortunately we won the competition and got a free family pass for the Christchurch Hi 5 show. Then after I YouTube some of their videos and show them to my 5 year old, and told her we will bring you there to see the show. She said "It is boring"

Anyway We (I, 5 year and 18 months daughters) went to see the show. It said that the show will be stared 1.00 pm, not only in the letter I got and also on Hi 5 facebook page. We went there around 1.10 pm and show had been started 12.30 pm. So the show had been finished half way. Anyway we got our seats and my daughters were excited to see the colours, lighting and sounds. There were not more than 500 people there. As I could see even the free passes were remained on the counter.

There was a Hi 5 shop in before entering the theatre and all the items were so expensive to buy not only for me but also other parents who were there. But I think because of their children parents had to buy something for their children as I did - had to buy a bag for my daughter. It was a waste for me. And they will not reduce the ticket price by 20% if there is a demand for them in Christchurch.

Anyway, definite the children enjoyed the time with the Hi 5 performers because of their lovely voices and actions. After coming home my 5 year old girl repeated some of their actions. So it was not boring for her after watching the real show. Though she did not ask me again to see it on YouTube she shared about the show with friends even by showing her Hi5 bag.

But for me to say frankly it would better to have this show outside in a park together with the children other than they are jammed in a theatre with the chairs which they really can not enjoy by themselves or better to take children to the stage. It would be value for the money they pay. And if I did not get the free family pass I would never go to see this show by paying that much money because there are many more things which we can enjoy with children free of charge in NZ.

We were lucky enough to receive a family pass to the Auckland show of HI-5 House Hits to review, to say Miss 3 was excited was an understatement as she is a huge fan of Hi-5 and had been begging me to take her to see the show every time she saw one of there advertisements.

Like most shows such as this there was a merchandise area set up targeted towards the children full of HI-5 items, such as clothing, HI-5 hands, DVD's and toys, unfortunately we had to skip this as the items were rather costly and we didn't have any money at the time to buy anything. If you do plan on buying something here be prepared it isn't cheap, especially if you have more than 1 child to buy for. There were guides waiting to escort us to our seats they all seemed lovely and were very friendly, when we found our seats Miss 3 and her cousin who is 8 were very excited by all of the props that were on stage, these looked like big speakers which were painted in bright colours, but were enough to excite all of the younger children in the audience.

The show was meant to start at 1.30pm, but unfortunately it didn't get started until closer to 1.45pm which was a bit of a shame due to the fact that most people seemed to have arrived at the show at around 1.20pm, which meant the children were starting to get rather restless while waiting for the show to start, perhaps a bit of prior entertainment would have been nice to avoid this, maybe even just getting one of the HI-5 group up on stage or playing some music for the children to dance to? Luckily when the HI-5 group hit the stage the audience was excited and happy to get started with the show.

The show started off with a bang with Tanika, Lachie, Chris, Mary and Dayen joining the stage and introducing themselves and the show. A magical music spinning wheel was bought onto the stage and this set the theme of the show, with Jup Jup leading the way as he spun the wheel and got the show started with the first song.

The show consisted of all of the most popular HI-5 songs such L.O.V.E, Five Senses, So Many Animals, and of course the Hi-5 theme song. It was great to see the audience being encouraged to get involved by the group, not only the children but the adults too. While the group did a lot of singing as a group, they also sang solos and did duets, which was nice to see as it changed it up a bit.

The sound was perfect not to loud and not to quiet, perfect for little ears to hear and enjoy, Miss 3 never once complained that it was loud or that she was scared which if something she will often complain of at such shows. I loved the visual components of the show from the simple movements on the projector screen at the back of the stage which had beautiful patterns, movements and contrasts to the songs being sung, right through to the colour changing lighting and the bubbles from the bubble machine, all very simple but effective at the same time, perfect for the targeted audience. The props used were again simple and were those which you would expect to see, just like those used on the show, as an Early Childhood teacher I have to say I really like the way in which the Hi-5 group act and perform as they always are so creative and they show children that you don't need expensive items to have fun, for example they made believe with just their own bodies or with a few cheap pieces of material such as stretchy, shiny fabric in the fish song which Miss3 and the rest of the crowd seemed to love the most.

Our seats were up rather high, this didn't affect our view at all, we could still see everything that was happening and get involved with all of the singing and dancing. It was a great show and something Miss 3 enjoyed thoroughly, as did myself, my Mum and my niece, we loved the songs and seeing so many happy children dancing and having fun. Miss 3 is already asking to go again so hopefully HI-5 return in the future so that she can do this. A great show thoroughly recommend it.
