I got this out at the library recently. I had heard about it through Donovan Bixley who is a New Zealand illustrator I follow. He did the pictures in this book, which I was keen to look at. The pictures are black and white and tie in well with the jokes on the page. Its not really a picture book though, so the picture takes a distant second on the content and jokes.

I sat and read this book to my 5 year old. I figured we would have a laugh. But it turns out she is a little too young for this. She didn't get many of the jokes at all, and her logical mind couldn't accept some of the answers. But she does love a good knock knock joke and in that chapter we revelled. She also picked up a few tips from the jokes and made up her own versions of the "interupting (blank)". So for example, her ones go:

Knock knock
who's there?
The annoying sheep
the annoying sh-
BAAAAAA!

This gave her hours of fun, while I tried to memorise some of the better ones to tell her when she let me have a turn. I liked the book a lot, and we got a lot of fun out of it. The only thing I did find was that sometimes a joke was in there twice or the punchline was the same as another joke. Not a big deal though and I love that it was a fundraiser as well. This would make a great gift.

I've only had a small chance to read this book and was enjoying the twist on some great classic jokes before my 11 year old took it. She reads it to EVERYONE she comes across and if i didn't bar it in the supermarket, i think she would have it in there too.

Some of the jokes just don't seem to be funny now that i've grown up but for the younger people in my life, they are great. The book itself seems to have a thicker page than a lot i have which makes it great for re-readability and many more hours of page turning.

With the fact that it supports a good cause gives even more reason to buy the book. It goes well in the handbag too.

Product reviews for listing 3907: A Winter's Day in 1939 -  Written by: Melinda Szymanik

Product image for A Winter's Day in 1939Sometimes in war the toughest enemies are starvation and disease.

Taken from their home, forced to leave their country, put to work in labour camps, frozen and starved, Adam doubts that he and his family will ever make it out alive.

Even if they were to get away, they might freeze to death, or starve, or the bears might get them. For the Polish refugees, the whole of the USSR becomes a prison from which there is no escape.
