Growing Pet Duck Egg product reviews

Just put the egg in a bowl of water and watch it hatch out of its egg and grow!

Takes 24-48 hours for the animal to break through the shell. After that the animal can grow even more!

My 9 year old niece received one of these for Christmas the other day and straight away we had to search for a container which we could use to grow her duck. We decided to use a standard mixing bowl and filled it just over half way with cold water and then carefully placed the egg inside.

The hardest bit for a child of age 9 (and also age 2 as my daughter was most intrigued to see a duck hatch from a egg) is having to wait, the girls seemed to be back and forwards from the kitchen bench all day long to check if anything had changed and whether or not the duck had hatched from the egg. Eventually bedtime came and so we had to leave the egg, to which they were a little dissapointed as it was almost 12 hours later and there had been no changes! However when they woke in the morning the first thing they did was race to the kitchen where they found that the egg had started to crack open slightly. By this evening the duck had completely hatched from it's shell which was super exciting. It provided lots of conversations about how baby ducks hatch and we related it back to how we saw the baby chickens and eggs at the A&P show earlier in the year. As both girls were really interested in this we ended up going onto YouTube and goggling baby ducks and chickens hatching from eggs.

We were lucky enough to find these at our local $2 shop, so the price for the process and enjoyment both girls got from this was well worth it, I saw that they also stock a hatching fox and also a dinosaur which I think I will go back and buy as a great way to learn about animals and for something a bit different.

For Easter not only did the Easter Bunny visit the girls but also the Easter Fairy. This year they were lucky to receive Growing Pets - a Duck Egg and a Bunny Egg.

They are so extremely easy to use: completely submerge the egg in to a container of water and sit back and wait. It does say that it will take between 12 - 24 hours to break and the creature will start to grow. In our case the Bunny had a crack after a couple of hours where as the Duck took over 24 hours to get its first crack showing.

We loved checking on the eggs regularly during the day and first thing in the morning. The Bunny definitely wanted to break free but I thought it would be best to let nature take its course and let it grow by itself without us helping it along. That was until day 4 when we noticed it was growing a little weird. So my husband cracked the egg and gently pulled the remaining pieces on it. One of its legs was completely squashed but when we placed it in clean water it expanded right before our eyes.

The duckie has taken its time. The cracks were slow to come and not as big as the bunny but it has been so educational for my five year old and two year old to learn how animals are born and how they grow. It has taken longer than we had expected and even today, over a week on we still have them in the water as they still seem to be growing slowly.

I ordered these through a facebook page Little Buds which is situated in Wanganui. They come in a couple of different designs: Lizard, Dinosaur, Easter Bunny, Duck and an Erupting Volcano. There are four designs per creature that you can collect as well.

They do feel rather funky we you touch them kind of like a wet jelly. But both girls are loving there new pets. I love that Easter can be about more than chocolate and that else well as being really fun to watch and grow they are learning a lot as well. Mind you was hard explaining that bunnies don't really come from eggs......
