Captain Underpants 12 And the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot product reviews

There is something rotten in the state of Ohio, and it's smellier than a pile of putrid gym socks. Steer clear, it's Sir Stinks-A-Lot.

In usual Captain Underpants style the cover is inviting and gives the kids a giggle. Both Mr 8 and Miss 10 enjoy the Captain Underpants series and it features on their wishlists often so we are always excited when we get picked to review the books! We usually read them as a family taking turns at each chapter. They are a great bonding tool!

As always I love that you can pick up literally ANY Captain Underpants story and it will be an enjoyable read! I feel they cover relevant topics in a way that speaks to kids and is done so in a fun but informative way. Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot discusses ADHD which I found great as both my children have peers in their class that have ADHD.

The font is easy to read and the illustrations are comic like. The chapters are short so easy to manage. You can pick up where you left off without a problem.

Captain Underpants does not feature heavily in this book which the kids were a little disappointed about but that did not stop them from wanting more! Their are a few twists that are enjoyable to read. I suggest Captain Underpants for the more open-minded parents!

We went off on holiday last week and were surprised to find that our cabin had no TV. Luckily I had asked the kids to pack a few things and books. When I went to get some books out I found this in my eldest daughter's things. I asked her where it came from and she said from the box from KIWIreviews. Whoops, I thought. I hadn't even seen it before she nabbed it. We had a talk about that, and then we sat down to start the book.

This was the first Captain Underpants book that I have read to both girls. Since the cabin was so small, both girls were happy to sit and listen to a thrilling adventure. Like every kid, my kids love toilet humour and are well versed in squealing "bum" at each other. So it was not too shocking that Miss 3 really took to this book. Miss 8 is an old hand at Dav Pilkey books, and particularly the Captain, so she was quite excited to share this with her sister too.

While Miss 3 couldn't pick up the more subtle comedy in the story (I get a great deal of enjoyment out of reading these aloud myself), she really liked the illustrations and the comic pages as well as the Flip-o-Rama pages. She even had a good go at trying these herself, while I had a mild panic about the pages ripping as she did so. She did okay though, and nothing ripped.

There is a bit is a running joke through this book about diet coke, Mentos and pop rocks. Now we have tried diet coke and Mentos before and it never does as good a spout of explosion as you hope. Now we are wondering about adding pop rocks. Though, both children are a little worried about blowing up the world too.

In this book there are a few interesting reveals. We are told the boys have ADHD and I'm sure this is the first mention of it. My eldest found this interesting as she knows a few boys and girls with ADHD. She thought the boys were even more amazing, given how hard it must be to concentrate on their drawings and stories. She also has some labels of her own, so she identified even more with the characters and that was really neat.

Later in the story the boys travel into the future and get to see themselves as adults with their partners and children. At this point, one of the families is not your typical "nuclear" family. As I was reading it, I was poised with glee to talk about how different families can be from ours, and that there is no wrong way to make up a family, etc. But neither child made any mention of it. So normal was this difference, that they didn't even flinch. Proud parenting moment for me. Yet, they asked a lot of different questions about Mentos explosions and we ended up on Youtube doing some research.

This book was really funny. We loved the way the boys mess with the teachers, and their plans. So many laugh out loud moments, even for me as a parent. Pilkey breaks the fourth wall often again, which makes it so fun. It felt like it wrapt up the series a bit at the end, and there is mention of a Dogman book coming. My eldest was so upset that she has to WAIT for this book. Meanwhile I wonder if we will see any new Captain Underpants in the future?
